I love how Morpheus is The Sandman but he is constantly humiliated or berated by women. I especially like when Lucienne does this, in canon or in fanfics.

only on my recent rewatch did i realise that rose wrote her story "into the night" ABOUT UNITY. I AM A MESS
and it's what unity deserves, honestly. i adore her
here are the first few lines that i can decipher--if anyone has a clearer image, i would love to see if you can piece together more!
All throughout her twelfth birthday in 1916, Unity Kincaid found herself dreaming of the kind of person she would grow up to be. Twelve was an important number. Twelve months in a year. Twelve hours on the clock’s face. Twelve noon between morning and day. Twelve midnight between night and morning.
#rose walker#unity kincaid#the sandman#the sandman netflix#lost hearts#i want to read this story SO. BAD.

Sandman Audible Appreciation Post - The Doll's House
So I read this page and I said to myself- cool- Lucien is walking around the Dreaming and taking the census.

But no!
Here is the Audible narration:
The palace of the lord of Dreams is no longer the ruin it was when he first returned from captivity, not that the sleeping Rose Walker is aware of its history. She dreams of elegant towers and walls studded with jewels and gems, covering not so much acres, as what seems like square miles. Lucien, reading from his ledger, walks up a driveway to a huge gateway, guarded, to Rose's alarm, by three huge mythological beasts: a wyvern, a hippogryph, and a griffin. They allow him to pass through the great outer doorway.
The palace of Dream contains many rooms. As befits a dream, and Rose's dream in particular, none of them appear to have any logical connection to each other. The hallway is lined with suits of armor. Lucien bustles through, lost in his calculations. In the next room, the suits of armor give way to storefront mannequins, unclothed, lining a huge swimming pool. The only way to walk across is by means of a long, unsteady plank. Lucien pays it little heed.
Each room presents new inconsistencies. Rose's dream seems almost random in its variety, yet Lucien is a constant factor, refusing to be distracted. The room through which subway trains pass is of no consequence to him either.
Lucien isn't walking around different parts of the Dreaming- he's walking through the palace, one long path taking him to Dream in the throne room, and as he walks from room to room, his surroundings are changing around him in that classic dream logic "I'm walking on a hallway oh now in the next room it's a swimming pool oh now in this room the wall has a face oh now it's a train track, huh ok that's cool" kind of way.
I just think that's so cool, and I literally didn't get that from just looking at the page. It wasn't until I heard the audiobook that I looked back at this page and I was like- ohhhh, panel 2 is the gatekeepers and the palace door, and then Lucien is walking through the palace. I needed the description to make that click for me. (I may just be dumb though lol)
Similarly, at the beginning, with the description of the Threshold of Desire:
The threshold is larger than you can easily imagine
Ok
perhaps a thousand feet high
Oh!! So like- the height of the Eiffel Tower? Ok yeah that's way way taller than i was picturing
And this is my appreciation post for reading the comic and listening to the Audible at the same time, because the combination in magic <3
Small Changes
Comic Miranda: "Free holidays in England don't grow on trees!" / Audible Miranda: "Free vacations in England don't grow on trees!"
When Unity first tells Miranda she's her mother:
Comic Miranda: "You're mad!" / Audible Miranda: "You're wrong!"
Two tiny tiny changes to make Miranda's dialogue more American, I am guessing ;)
Dream Line Readings
James McAvoy is relatively calm in this episode!
Morpheus only appears on 5 pages (and only 3 of them are speaking pages- the other 2 he is just hilariously lurking in the dollhouse), and James McAvoy is excellent, as always, but he doesn't do any yelling that sends me into hysterics this time around.
I would like to share this, possibly one of my most favorite pages of the entire comic:
It is gorgeous
Look how good The Dreaming looks! Look at him rebuilding!
I just really really like to think of Dream being like- oh I hear Lucien about to come in, time to ✨strike a pose✨
I really like this issue overall. We meet Desire and Despair! We see a gallery and the sigils for the first time. We meet Rose and Miranda and learn how they're related to Unity! (Rose and Miranda are shocked to acquire a parent/grandparent- and little do they know that the reader has also just met their other parent/grandparent- but the reader doesn't know it yet either mwahaha!) We see The Dreaming in its renewed splendor, see Dream and Lucien going about their work, meet the Corinthian and hear about Brute/Glob/Fiddler's Green, learn about the concept of a dream vortex for the first time. We start to learn more about how the Endless relate to and interact with mortals, and with each other, and with the world around them. Good stuff is to come. In general I am a big fan of this arc.

really silly idea: Rose is annoyed at Lucienne for... some unknown reason... and decides to do something a bit petty: turns every book across two entire racks of shelves so the spines face inward, then dreams up a sign that reads 'mystery section, happy hunting'. The really funny part is bc Rose did this with her mind in the Dreaming, her Endless blood means that no matter how many times Lucienne fixes it, it just reverts back to what Rose did- only she, or Dream, can fix it, and *he* thinks it's funny.
Ooh, great prompt! I started it, and I'll give you what I've got, and hopefully I'll finish it one day!
Lucienne huffed impatiently. The books were backwards again. What the fuck was going on? She turned them around again—acknowledging the futility of it didn’t mean she could help her urge to see the library tidy before she left the section.
“My Lord,” she began the next time Morpheus wandered by her desk in the library, “do you know anything about the new ’mystery section’?” When he looked confused, she clarified. “The section of Agatha Christie’s unpublished novels keep turning around so the edge is facing out. No matter how many times I fix them, the next day they are backwards again.”
“Ah. Yes.”
“That’s all? Just yes? Can you fix it?”
“I can. But I won’t.”
Lucienne was even more confused now.
“You won’t? Have I offended you in some way, my Lord?”
“It is not I whom you have offended, Lucienne.”
“Who is it, then?”
But he just smirked, and wandered off again.
Lucienne put her head in her hands. Apparently, this was going to take some sleuthing.
—
The next time she spotted Matthew flying through, she flagged him down.
“Matthew! Do you have a moment?”
“Sure, Boss lady! What’s up?” He flapped down to perch on a low shelf, incidentally right across from the cantankerous shelf. Well. Not so incidentally, because she spent more time than she ought to standing in front of it and scratching her head (metaphorically, of course).
“It’s these books. I can’t get them to stay facing forward. Lord Morpheus said that perhaps I have offended someone. Do you know of anyone who would have reason to play a prank on me?”
“A prank on you?! No! Why would someone do that?”
“I don’t know, that’s the problem!” Lucienne wasn’t wailing, she would never raise her voice in the library. That was her story, and she was sticking to it. “If you hear of anything, will you tell me?”
“So, you want me to spy for you as well as Lord Morpheus?” Matthew tilted his head from side to side, fixing her with his beady raven eyes.
“No! That’s not…” Lucienne paused so she wouldn’t dig herself further in. “I don’t want you to spy for me. Just, as a friend, let me know if you come across anything?”
“Sure, sure, I was just teasing you. I’ll let you know if I hear anything. Good luck with that!” As he flew off, Lucienne was almost sure she heard raven laughter.
—
“Mervyn, do you know anyone I might have offended lately? Someone seems to be pulling a prank on me.”
Mervyn paused his installation of a new set of shelves for Tiktok videos and turned to consider her.
“Shit, no, Loosh. You do good work. Only a fool would fuck with you.”
“Well, that’s reassuring to hear, but doesn’t help me solve the mystery.”
“Huh.” Merv scratched his head (not metaphorically). “Well, I’ll tell you if I see anything suspicious.”
“Thanks, Mervyn.” This was never going to be resolved, Lucienne despaired as Mervyn turned back to his work.
—
The Dreaming didn’t have day and night, necessarily, but Lucienne had found that if she kept track of Hob Gadling’s schedule, she could occasionally take a night off to spend with Gault. This morning, she was lying with her head comfortably on Gault’s shoulder, putting off getting up and facing the mystery in the library for one more day.
“What’s the matter, love?” Gault suddenly asked.
“What? Why would you say that? Nothing’s wrong.” Lucienne nuzzled her face into Gault’s breast, but it was too obvious that she was avoiding her eyes. Gault tipped her chin up so Lucienne couldn’t avoid her eyes.
“Nonsense. Most mornings you are raring to go back to your precious books, but this morning you keep giving heavy sighs and tucking back into my arm. Tell me what’s wrong, love.”
Lucienne closed her eyes in chagrin. She hadn’t meant to be so obvious.
“You’re right. It’s the books in the Agatha Christie unpublished section. They are facing backwards, and every time I right them, they turn back around again. The only one I can think of who could do that is Lord Morpheus, but he says it isn’t him. He suggested that perhaps I have offended someone, but wouldn’t tell me who.
I can’t figure out who it is, and by this point, I feel like the whole castle is laughing at me.”
“Oh love, I’m sure everyone isn’t laughing at you.” But Gault couldn’t quite hide the twinkle in her eyes and the smirk tucked in the corner or her lips from Lucienne.
“Oh you!” Lucienne laughed and Gault joined her. Truly, laughing about it made the mystery feel so much lighter. Not that Lucienne wasn’t still going to solve it.
“Oh! Oh, I know! You should ask Unity. She has her pulse on the social situation in the Dreaming.”
“Gault! That’s a great idea!” Now that she had a plan, Lucienne was finally ready to face the day. She reached up to kiss Gault one last time, and then they rolled out of bed in their coordinated morning dance. It was so nice to share space with someone familiar and beloved.
—
“Thank you for inviting me for tea, Lucienne.” Unity settled gracefully into the chair opposite Lucienne’s and took the tea cup Lucienne handed her.
“Thank you for coming. I admit, I have an ulterior motive for inviting you today.”

Unity's Party
Yay! It's here! 2.7k words of fluffy sweetness and family shenanigans!
Unity has a party. This is fine. (Yes, that’s an intentional reference to the meme.) With this family, what could possibly go wrong?
Featuring @xift42069 who now has a tumblr of their own (what even is my life?)!
Thank you to @ilya-halfelven for prompts and art!!!
“You are invited” Jed bounced up and down excitedly, holding out the invitation card to Rose but not actually letting her see it. “You’ll have to hold it still if you want me to see what you are so excited about!” she laughed. “Nana Unity’s having a party! Can I go Rose, can I go!?” “Of course you can!” she exclaimed. “But it would help if you’d let me read the details.”

Portraying Black Female Characters in Sandman Fic
A fanfic may not have the same reach as a published book, but being aware of how we’re portraying the many Black women of the Sandman in our fics and our posts is still imperative. As I am nonblack, the only piece of advice I can offer is this: pay attention to how Black women write about themselves. Read books by and about Black women. Listen to music by Black women and consider their lyrics. Educate yourself on damaging stereotypes Black women face in order to avoid reinforcing them in your writing. Just…see how creators portray people who share their own identities. That’s vital. Absolutely essential, even.
Below the cut I have included a few personal recommendations if you’re interested.
Books
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. A gorgeously written, emotionally expansive novel beginning with vignettes about two sisters who never met: in 18th century Ghana, one sister marries a white British officer, and the other is sold into slavery and trafficked to the United States. The book then follows the descendents of these sisters through eight generations. We only spend a single chapter with each character, but Gyasi is so, SO gifted at making you care about them as people in the limited time we spend with them.
(She also wrote an article in 2020 that is well worth a read, and raises points that are important to keep in mind as we seek out more diverse media.)
The Brown Sisters Trilogy by Talia Hibbert. These three books are romances (each book is about one of the titular sisters), and they’re fun and flirty with interesting, distinct characters. I was trying to think of a favorite one, but I couldn’t! They’re all enjoyable in different ways.
Music
“Deathless,” “River,” “Creature (Perfect),” “Vale,” and “Juice of Mandarins” by Ibeyi
“Black Woman” by Danielle Brooks
“Protect Your Queen” by Sampa the Great
“She’s Got Her Ticket” by Tracy Chapman
The entirety of Lemonade by Beyoncé + “Brown Skin Girl” and “I Was Here”
Additionally, here are some links to posts or articles that address the “Strong Black Woman” trope. I see undertones or overt representations of this with Lucienne often in this fandom, and I think it’s a stereotype we need to be especially aware of.
Post: a quote from the TV show Harlem
Post: 10 Ways You Can Support Black Women (specifically #9, but the whole post is important.)
